Water Candle
“Let all who are weary let them come to the water.”
Perhaps you have sung this line in your parish, read it from
your Bible or heard it read in your Temple. It’s in Isaiah and is the foundation for The Water Candle.
We are invited to the water that brings life to nets of fishermen who in turn are caught in the net of faith. Water bringing healing to the weary innumerable footfalls and sightless eyes of souls in need. Water crashing upon our small boats in the passionate embrace of the Holy Spirit. Finally, water calmed and contained in the vessel, the chalice, the well of the Christ.
This candle begins with the water jars of Cana in honor of His Mother’s simple request. They are held by another woman, a Samaritan to whom the new testament will begin His revelation in the same simple manner, “Give me to drink.”
Calming the great sea, coming to save his friends and to save us is the Christ. He transforms from water into wine and stands within a circle of the Eucharist. His garment changing from cool water to warm blood. His body and blood fills the chalice assuring our redemption if we partake of it.
John the Baptist, straight as a plank and the base for the chalice that when filled fills the world. “Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make straight his paths.”
Bordering John on the left is Christ, using his spittle to make the blind man see. Water from his own body in service to humankind so that we may see the glory of God. On the right a more humble service. Washing the feet of a friend.
At John’s feet are the fishermen. Did they know then how full their ancient nets would become? They struggle against a mighty catch which still fills their nets today. “And Jesus saith to Simon:
Fear not: from henceforth thou shalt catch men.”
