Mary’s Candle
The day begins. You wake Mary and fix something to eat. You aren’t hungry but you must eat or you’ll never get through what you must do today. You both are sad over what has just happened and face the day wondering if you’ll ever be happy again. You collect herbs and spices and walk to the tomb. You never thought he’d really die, did you? But he did.
And you trod through the garden to the grave not speaking, watching your feet. You will not hear the birds singing. You begin to notice spears and helmets scattered across your path. No sign of the guard anywhere just signs of panic. The campfire still burns. Your heart pounds like running feet.
You are at the tomb. Men surround it like statues, their joints confounded by the sight, the tomb broken. The stone tossed aside like paper. Mary is on the ground and you are surprised to find yourself next to her. A voice speaks. The ground rumbles in reply. Is it the stones or birds that you hear singing?
The voice speaks, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. He is not here, for he has risen even as he said.” And you are not afraid. “Come see the place where the Lord was laid.” It seems filled with flowers. “Go quickly and tell his desciples that he is risen; and behold, he goes before you to Galilee; there you shall see him.” You almost can’t catch Mary, she is so fast.
You’ve not run since you where a child but off you go. Running for the joy of it. Running from an evening of broken hearts and bloody trees. Running through the flowers like little girls. Running towards the sun as the day begins.
